is Miekal And and Liz Was' project of improvised performances. Side one
is subtitled The Only Catalyst Symphony of Banjovere Jobanick. The
liner notes (done, incidentally, on onion skin paper) go on to describe
Jobanick who, "spent a lifetime repairing banjos int he backroom of
Divine Monochord String Repair in Avalance, Wisconsin. Living in a
small rural community, his compositions went unnoticed till long after
his death on Dec. 1, 1987. Browsing thru a dusty resale shop, we
discovered a score completed on Dec. 25, 1957. A footnote on the score
suggests that it was intended as a sound track for a 16mm painted
film." Using samplers, synths, ocarina, voices, prepared banjos,
computer drums and innocent invention, Was, And and company explore the
timeless space with an often chaotic, uncontrolled and uncontrollable
energy. Miekal and Liz's son, Liaizon Wakest, performs on percussion
and voice, and Drake Scott contributes Chapman Stick and voices. For
those who love the pure spirit of improvisation and all kinds beautiful
noises.. Reviewed by Bryan Baker 6/30/92. OTHER COMMENTS |
